Description

In this presentation, we will explore the opioid crisis that has become a public health concern in our communities. Nurse practitioners are at a great advantage for helping with this crisis through education and other sources. John’s Hopkins conceptual model is also explored and why it is important for masters prepared nurses to be involved in evidenced-based projects. NONPF developed some core competencies that an NP should posses throughout their career and can be used in relation to the opioid crisis

Introduction

  • There is an on-going opioid crisis in America.
  • How Nurse Practitioners can help with opioid crisis and influence change.
  • The importance of master’s-prepared nurses involving in evidenced based projects.
  • The John’s Hopkins model is pertinent in developing evidenced-based projects.
  • Identifying how National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies are relevant to the opioid crisis

Why is this Important?

It is always good for Nurse practitioners to be involved in evidenced base project especially how our healthcare system is very diverse. According to Ginex, 2017, evidence-base practice is “a lifelong approach to clinical practice that integrates a systematic search, appraisal, and synthesis of relevant research, clinical expertise, and patient preferences and value”. It is important for NP to conduct evidenced-based project because they will identify areas in our health system needs improvement or change, conduct researches and apply results into practice. These evidence-based practices in return can improve our health system, by reducing cost, improve patient outcomes and create greater satisfaction for both patients and clinicians (Alfonzo, Gephart, Hastings-Tolsma, Vincent, 2015). As a future NP being involved in the evidenced-based project will help develop awareness about issues affecting healthcare, help with professional growth and become more knowledgeable. Lifelong learning is the only way NP will keep up to date about changes in our healthcare system, the patient population, and government regulations.
