Select a passage from Long Way Down or Speak or use a passage assigned by your instructor.

In 500-750 words, complete a close reading of the passage. Your close reading should demonstrate how the passage explores and addresses the theme of identity and how the passage is representative of young adult fiction. Be sure to use specific words, phrases, sentences from the text to support this thematic and genre analysis.

In this close reading, you must do the following:

  1. Examine in great detail language, voice, and literary devices to help you interpret and find an underlying meaning to the passage and how it represents the theme of identity and young adult literature.
  2. Be sure to provide an effective introductory paragraph that introduces the literary work, its author, some context, and a clear thesis. Your thesis will make a case for how the passage is relevant to the theme of
  3. Include textual evidence from the passage to support each point you make.
  4. Provide a clear discussion of how the literary elements (imagery, metaphor/simile, narrative voice, symbolism, diction, etc.) add to your understanding of the passage and illustrate the theme.
  5. Analyze and explain how this passage is representative of young adult literature.
