Evidenced-Based Practice
Evidenced-based practice (EBP) is a tool often used throughout healthcare. It is used to perform best practice. It is research used to provide quality, safe care that help improve patient outcomes. Evidenced-based practice is often promoted and discussed in the healthcare field, but it raises a question if registered nurses are competent in evidenced-based practice. In order to provide quality care, a healthcare professional must be competent in EBP. According to Melnyk, Gallagher, Zellefrow, Tucker, Thomas, Sinnott, & Tan (2018), there is a need to improve nurses’ skills to be able to achieve competency in evidenced-based practice. Younger nurses and nurses with higher level of education had higher EBP competency levels than those that did not have higher level of education. It is important for academic programs to ensure that healthcare workers achieve competency in EBP. Academic programs that require students to engage in evidence-based projects help promote competency in EBP (Melnyk, Gallagher, Zellefrow, Tucker, Thomas, Sinnott, & Tan, 2018).
