Description
The purpose of the Virtual Interactive Student Evaluation (VISE) assignment is to evaluate student progress in the clinical setting. The assignment will consist of a mid-term phone check-in between faculty and the student to enhance critical thinking and communication.
This VISE assignment emphasizes appropriate conversation with patients, succinct data gathering, and enhancing the client clinical experience. The client is assigned at the time of the VISE call. This assignment supports the professional formation of the family nurse practitioner (FNP).
Preparing the Assignment
VISE Topic: Client presentation
For the NR601 VISE call, the faculty member will choose a client from the student’s clinical log. The faculty member will then review that log and note with the student that the client is calling back for one of the following:
- medication failure
- worsening of symptoms
- failure to improve
- allergic reaction/rash from medication
- new symptom
The focus is for the student to gather data, make appropriate decisions, and provide client education on home care or follow-up. Plan to access MyEvaluations during the call so that you can refer to the selected client’s information.

For each step in the VISE call, faculty will rate performance as proficient, average, or needs improvement. The Clinical VISE assignment grade is pass/fail. Students who do not pass the VISE on the first attempt will be placed on a clinical Performance Improvement Plan [PIP] and given a second attempt to pass the VISE before the end of the course. The student must successfully pass the VISE to pass the course.
