Scenario One
Sarah is a 32-year-old pregnant female at 24 weeks gestation presenting for a routine prenatal visit. Her PMH includes hypertension and acne. Her current medications include isotretinoin and spironolactone. She was taking lisinopril, but this was discontinued due to her pregnancy. Her social history includes three cups of coffee per day, and she denies the use of alcohol and smoking. Her labs include Hgb 12.8, HCT 39.9, K 4.7, glucose 78, BUN 12, Cr 0.78. Her labs are normal during pregnancy. Her blood pressure is 150/95 mmHg, measured twice with a 5-minute interval.
Scenario Two
Lydia is a 24-year-old sexually active female complaining of vaginal discharge for one week. She reports having unprotected sex with a new male partner for the last month. Her current allergies include sulfa drugs. Lydia was tested for any sexually transmitted diseases and was found to be positive for gonorrhea.
Scenario Three
Edgar is a 6-year-old boy with complaints of his right eye being red and swollen with a crusty, yellow discharge. He has been diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis in the right eye. Edgar’s allergies include sulfa drugs, amoxicillin, and penicillin. He is currently only taking montelukast every night. Bacterial conjunctivitis is an inflammation and infection of the conjunctiva caused by bacteria (Medscape, 2019). Edgar’s mother asked if bacterial conjunctivitis is the same as “pink eye.” I would tell his mother that, yes, it is the same as “pink eye.” “Pink eye” is the common name for this condition (Medscape, 2019).
Scenario Four
JT is a 3-year-old male who weighs 15 kg. He was recently diagnosed with acute otitis media. Acute otitis media (AOM) is an infection and inflammation of the middle ear with fluid present in the middle ear (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). Symptoms of AOM include otalgia, fever, vomiting, and irritability (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021).
